The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that cholera cases are spreading globally and the death toll is rising. The WHO report states that there are currently outbreaks in 31 countries, with 4,738 deaths from cholera. The report states, "Given the scale and interconnected nature of the outbreaks, the risk of further spread within and between countries is very high."
The WHO listed conflict, poverty, and inadequate infrastructure as the primary causes of the increase in outbreaks, emphasizing that the risk is particularly high in rural areas and areas affected by floods.
AT LEAST 11 DEAD IN NIGERIANigeria has declared a cholera alert. At least eight people have died from a cholera outbreak in the Bukkuyum district of Zamfara state in the northwestern region. More than 200 people have been infected across 11 communities in the state. Local officials said limited access to healthcare and security issues are exacerbating the crisis.
Mohammed Jibci, an official of Gurusu village in Niger state, said, "More than 21 patients are currently hospitalized, but three people have died due to delays in reaching Nasarawa General Hospital."
EMERGENCY CALLMP Suleiman Abu Bakr Gumi called on the Zamfara government and international NGOs to intervene urgently. He said, "Any delay will result in more casualties, especially among women and children," and demanded the deployment of emergency response teams and cholera treatment centers.
