Autumn has arrived, pollen is on the scene! Which plants are more allergenic?

Dr. Gülhan Demiroğlu, an Allergy and Immunology Specialist at İzmir Buca Seyfi Demirsoy Training and Research Hospital, stated that allergic diseases increase in the fall due to the concentration of pollen in the air, and warned citizens to be careful. Dr. Demiroğlu explained that when pollen enters the body through inhalation, the immune system produces histamine, which leads to symptoms such as runny nose, congestion, sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, and itching. Dr. Demiroğlu said, "Symptoms aren't limited to the nose and eyes; fatigue, weakness, irritability, headaches, and loss of concentration can also occur. In advanced cases, it can develop into serious respiratory illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis."
WHICH PLANTS ARE MORE ALLERGENIC?
Dr. Demiroğlu noted that some trees and grasses increase pollen density, providing the following information: "Those that are more allergenic are maple, cedar, poplar, oak, pine, some grasses, and Timothy grass. Those that are less allergenic are apple, cactus, cherry, dahlia, daisy, geranium, hibiscus, iris, snapdragon, and tulip. Our citizens should avoid planting trees known to be allergenic around their homes and, if present, limit their contact with these plants."
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN DAILY LIFE
Dr. Demiroğlu offered the following suggestions for protecting yourself from pollen:
- Avoid going out between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and in the evening, when pollen density increases. - Use a mask and sunglasses.
- Be sure to take a shower and change your clothes when you return home.
- Stay away from items that can trap pollen, such as shaggy carpets, blankets, and pets.- Keep doors and windows closed, use air conditioners or air purifiers with HEPA filters.
- Do not dry your clothes in the open air.- Keep the windows closed in the vehicle and choose vehicles with pollen filters.
- If possible, plan your holidays in seaside areas where pollen density is low.DON'T UNDERESTIMATE ALLERGIES
Dr. Demiroğlu emphasized that pollen allergy shouldn't be viewed as a simple ailment, saying, " Allergic diseases reduce quality of life and can develop into serious health problems like asthma if precautions aren't taken. If symptoms persist, you should definitely consult a doctor."
