Incorrect use of ATMs can lead to theft of personal data and loss of money, warned Vadim Vinogradov, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the National Research University Higher School of Economics , in a conversation with Lenta.ru. In particular, the lawyer recommended paying more attention to the checks issued.
"ATM receipts contain confidential information: the last digits of the card, the amount withdrawn, the current account balance. Fraudsters can use this data, so it is better to destroy receipts in a secure way, for example, by tearing them into small pieces or shredding them," Vinogradov said. "Also, in a hurry, people often forget to press the "Finish" button on the screen. This leaves the ATM in an active state, giving the next user the opportunity to access your data."
According to him, a particularly dangerous situation is when a person forgets a card in an ATM. Criminals can use it to withdraw cash or do other things.
"Criminals also use distraction techniques. While one person is distracting you with a conversation, another can perform illegal manipulations. Always remain vigilant and avoid communicating with strangers near the ATM. If you notice suspicious activity, stop the transaction immediately," the expert advised.
He also called for using only verified ATMs in banks or large shopping centers. In addition, Vinogradov recommended checking the devices for foreign devices and elements, such as overlays or cameras.
"You should change your PIN codes regularly. This will provide additional protection for your banking transactions," the expert explained. "For online purchases, it is better to use temporary virtual cards with limited limits, which will reduce the likelihood of theft of the main amount from the account."
Earlier, Russians were warned about fraud on behalf of Rosreestr . It was reported that the attackers began distributing links in messengers supposedly for paying state fees.
