Study shows how Athletico and Coritiba would be impacted by financial fair play

With the issue increasingly prominent in Brazilian football, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is already studying the implementation of a financial fair play model with clubs.

Based on this, a study released by the specialized consultancy, Sports Value , was based on the finances of the country's teams in the last three seasons (2022, 2023 and 2024) to design how the tool would affect each of them.

According to the study, nine Brasileirão clubs would "fail" the methodology developed by Sports Value for eventual financial fair play in Brazilian football.

The methodology is based on three main points:

• Strict control of deficits and losses of clubs and SAFs – maximum loss of R$20 million on average over the last three years;
• Control of spending on player salaries and signings of new reinforcements, reaching a maximum of 73% of total revenue;
• Debt control – net debt/revenue ratio below 2.0.

According to these criteria, and taking into account the last three seasons, nine clubs in the Brasileirão Série A could be punished.

Atlético-MG, Bahia, Botafogo, Corinthians, Cruzeiro, Grêmio, São Paulo, Santos and Vasco would be in the red, that is, they would exceed R$20 million in losses.

In addition to the clubs in the Brasileirão Série A, the study also included teams from the second division, such as Athletico and Coritiba .

According to the criteria established for the hypothetical application of financial fair play, Coxa would also be in the red, but within the stipulated limit of negative R$20 million.

Considering the average of the last three years, Alviverde registered a deficit of R$14.7 million. A similar situation to Vitória (- R$10.2 million) and Ceará (- R$4.2 million).

Athletico would be at the top of the list of clubs that are in the best financial situation in the country and operate in the "green". Furacão was, alongside Flamengo, the club with the best performances in the last three years.

Both Athletico and Flamengo each posted surpluses of R$151.5 million during the period, followed by Palmeiras, with a surplus of R$75 million.
