Corinthians closes the season with a campaign worse than the relegation year

The 2-1 defeat to Juventude , this Monday (11), in Caxias do Sul (RS), not only kept Corinthians away from the top positions in the Brazilian Championship, but also placed the campaign in the first round among the worst in the club's recent history.
With 22 points and just five wins in 19 rounds, the team sits in 13th place, six points above Vasco, the first team in the relegation zone. Since 2006, when the Brasileirão expanded to 20 clubs and 38 rounds, the team's performance has only been better than in 2006 (20 points) and 2024 (19 points).
In 2007, the year of relegation, Corinthians finished the first half of the championship with 26 points and six wins, a better performance than they are now. The trend for 2025 could worsen, as Vasco and Grêmio still have matches to play at the end of the first half, potentially pushing Dorival Júnior's team down to 16th place, one above the bottom four.
Despite experiencing a similar situation last year, when they bounced back with a strong second half of the season and reached the Copa Libertadores, this is a time for alarm. In the current Brasileirão, the team is struggling offensively and defensively: 18 goals scored and 23 conceded. Since taking over from Ramón Díaz in the seventh round, Dorival has earned 13 points in 13 games (33.3% success rate).

"I don't know what we need, but we need to have attitude. Something is missing," the coach declared after the defeat to Juventude.
Corinthians' next commitmentThus, Corinthians returns to the field next Saturday (16/8), against Bahia, at Neo Química Arena, for the 20th round of the Brasileirão. In addition to the injury absences, Dorival will not be able to count on Angileri, Romero and Cacá, who are suspended.
