Back to school: Families expect to spend 200 euros on online shopping

Back-to-school is here, and with this period comes increased financial pressure for families. On average, Portuguese families expect to spend up to 200 euros online, according to the Webloyalty Online Shopping in Portugal 2025 study.
At a time when the cost of living for a Portuguese family is between two and three thousand euros, online shopping is becoming an increasingly popular alternative for families to compare prices and find cheaper options.
"Buying back-to-school products is a time of spending for families, which makes it worthwhile to consider joining shopping clubs like Compra e Poupa," notes Eduardo Esparza, VP General Manager of Webloyalty Iberia and Brazil.
Despite this average value, the amount varies between Portuguese regions, with the Madeira region expected to spend the most, almost 300 euros on this return to school.
The products that Portuguese people buy most online are stationery, clothing, books, technology, shoes and backpacks.
Eduardo Esparza states that "e-commerce is becoming increasingly important during the back-to-school season in Portugal. In fact, 11% of respondents said they will buy more online during this campaign than last year."
"Searching for deals, the ease of comparing prices, and avoiding lines and travel are some of the main advantages that lead families to buy items for their children through digital channels," he says.
The Azores and Faro are the regions where the most school supplies were purchased online last year. This year, the Portuguese who say they will buy more online than last year are from Alentejo, the Azores, the Center, Faro, Madeira, Lisbon, and the North region.
