On the last Thursday of April, a plaque commemorating the Home Army soldiers who did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives for the freedom of their homeland was unveiled in Jarosław. The commemoration is located on the grounds of the King Casimir the Great Construction and General Education School Complex, and the honorary patronage over the event was assumed by the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda.
The main part of the event was preceded by a mass celebrated in the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Poland, led by the parish priest – prelate Krzysztof Szczygielski together with priest Jerzy Bartoszek. The eucharist was attended by numerous residents, youth, veterans and representatives of state and local authorities.
The highlight of the ceremony was the later unveiling of a plaque commemorating the Home Army soldiers who died in a heroic fight against the communist regime officers on 27 October 1944. They were: the squad leader Tadeusz Bernatowicz, pseudonym "Twardy" (aged 30), Eugeniusz Czajło, pseudonym "Zew" (aged 21), Marian Różycki, pseudonym "Stalka" (aged 21), Andrzej Wachałowicz, pseudonym "Sztaba" (aged 19) – who died a few days later from his wounds, Rozalia Surmiak (aged around 40) – the wife of the school janitor, killed in the doorway of her own home.
The commemoration on the wall of the facility was dedicated by Father Prelate Andrzej Surowiec. The event was accompanied by a roll call of the fallen, ending with an honorary salute fired by soldiers of the Military Honorary Assistance of the 14th Self-Propelled Artillery Division in Jarosław, and the laying of wreaths and flowers by the delegations that arrived. Among the participants were, among others, representatives of the families of the victims.
- By unveiling this plaque, we are not only restoring the memory of our heroes - the Home Army soldiers - but also passing on to the young generation a message about freedom, which is never given once and for all. This place will be a symbol of our gratitude and memory, which we must not lose - emphasized the Jarosław district governor Kamil Dziukiewicz in his speech.
This solemn moment was also highlighted by occasional artistic performances.
The initiators of the creation of the plaque were: the Complex of Construction and General Education Schools named after King Casimir the Great in Jarosław, the Association of War Veterans of the Republic of Poland and the Association of Persons Repressed during Martial Law.
