Recently, during border checks at the border crossings in Medyka, Krościenko and Malhowice, Customs and Fiscal Service officers from the Podkarpackie National Fiscal Administration discovered haberdashery made from protected snake skins.
In Medyka, officers came across a leather bag in the luggage of a driver who was entering Poland from Ukraine. The item was made of the skin of a python snake (Pythonidae spp), which is protected under the Washington Convention CITES. The 36-year-old Ukrainian citizen who was transporting the bag did not present the required documents for inspection.
Similar permits were not held by a 43-year-old Ukrainian citizen who was carrying a handbag and a belt also made of the skin of a python snake, nor by a 42-year-old woman who was found in possession of another handbag made of the same species of snake.
Another product made of the skin of protected species – a backpack – was detected on the person of a 42-year-old man who crossed the border in Malhowice.
The transport of endangered plant and animal specimens and products made from them across borders is regulated by the Washington Convention CITES. Its purpose is to protect wild populations of endangered animal and plant species. The convention regulates the control, monitoring and restriction of international trade in these species, their parts and derivatives, such as clothing, haberdashery, souvenirs or medical supplements. The illegal transport of CITES-protected specimens is punishable by high penalties – up to 5 years in prison.
