Judoka Catharina stranded in second round of World Championship

Judoka Simeon Catharina was eliminated in the second round of the World Championships. In the class up to 100 kilograms he had to acknowledge his superior in the Russian Matvey Kanikovskiy, who won the European title last year.
The 27-year-old Catharina won bronze at the European Championships earlier this year. But he quickly fell behind against Kanikovskiy (waza-ari). He then failed to surprise the Russian. He won in the first round with an ippon against the Brit Rhys Thompson.
Among the women, Guusje Steenhuis disappointed. She suffered an injury in her first match against Anna Monta Olek in the class up to 78 kilograms and was subsequently unable to offer the German sufficient competition. Steenhuis did finish the match, but grabbed her painful shoulder several times. She lost with a waza-ari. The 32-year-old Steenhuis won one silver and two bronze at a World Championship. Lieke Derks was also eliminated in the class up to 78 kilograms. She lost in the second round to the Chinese Ma Zhenzhao (waza-ari)
