AZ will play in the second preliminary round of the Conference League against the loser of the two-legged tie between Shakhtar Donetsk and the Finnish Ilves Tampere. This was determined by a draw at the Swiss headquarters of UEFA in Nyon.

AZ will start on July 24 with an away match. A week later, the return match will follow in Alkmaar. Shakhtar and Tampere will meet in the first round of the Europa League. The loser will get a second chance against AZ in the Conference League.

AZ qualified for the second preliminary round of the Conference League via the play-offs for European football in the Eredivisie. The third round of the third competition for club teams of UEFA is scheduled for 7 and 14 August. If AZ defeats two opponents, the decisive play-offs for a place in the main tournament of the Conference League will follow on 21 and 28 August.
