Pope Leo XIV. Today's news. Tomorrow the first Angelus, Parolin: "Struck by his serenity"

After his election and the mass in the Sistine Chapel , today Pope Leo XIV met with the cardinals for a two-hour discussion where he renewed his “full adherence to the Vatican Council”, explained the reason for the name chosen to “respond to the AI revolution” and said he wanted to resume “the path of Francis”. Tomorrow, Sunday 11 May , there will be the first Regina Coeli from the central Loggia of St. Peter’s while on 18 May the mass for the inauguration of his pontificate will be held, for which up to 250 thousand faithful and leaders from all over the world are expected. The Pontiff has provisionally confirmed all of his Curia duties and will remain in his apartment at the Holy Office for now, awaiting work on the Apostolic Palace.
Pope, two-hour meeting with cardinals
The meeting of Pope Leo XIV lasted two hours, from 10 to 12 and was held in the New Synod Hall. It was introduced by a greeting from Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. The Vatican press office reported. After the Pope's speech, we learn, there were several interventions by the cardinals, many of which reiterated the themes already addressed in the General Congregations.
Pope Leo XIV to Cardinals: “You are my closest collaborators, this is a great comfort to me in this commitment beyond anyone's strength”
“You, dear Cardinals, are the Pope’s closest collaborators, and this is a great comfort to me in accepting a yoke that is clearly far beyond my strength, as well as that of anyone else,” Pope Leo XIV tells the cardinals. And he adds that he gathers the “precious legacy” of Francis and the “full adherence” “to the path that the universal Church has been following for decades in the wake of the Second Vatican Council.”

The parish priest of Tor Bella Monaca: “He is the Pope of the suburbs, I invited him and I hope he returns soon to Santa Rita”
"We are waiting for the Pope in Tor Bella Monaca. I hope he will come and I invite him. As a pontiff attentive to the suburbs, he could come here for his first visit. Moreover, he already came last year on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the consecration of the church of Santa Rita". Thus Father Francesco Maria Giuliani , head of the parish of Tor Bella Monaca, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Rome. Giuliani knows the new pontiff personally, being also an Augustinian.
Meeting with Cardinals Ends. Tsarahazana: “Excellent Pope, He Had More Than 100 Votes”
"This morning's meeting went very well, we also spoke about the need to make the church more collegial. He is an excellent Pope and he had much more than 100 votes." This was stated by Cardinal Désiré Tsarahazana of Madagascar, Metropolitan Archbishop of Toamasina, as he left the new Pope's first meeting with the cardinals gathered in Rome for the conclave.
Leo XIV's busy May agenda
Pope Leo XIV has already outlined his agenda for the next few days: tomorrow he will meet the cardinals while on Sunday 11 May the first Regina Coeli from the central Loggia of St. Peter's. On Monday 12 May the meeting with the world press. On 20 May the taking possession of the Papal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls while on 21 May the first general audience. And again: on 24 May the meeting with the Roman Curia and Vatican employees. The calendar of the next appointments arrives on Sunday 25 May , with the Regina Caeli (which in this liturgical period replaces the Angelus) and the taking possession of the Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran and that of the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major.
Cardinal Mamberti: “Surprised by the name he chose”
Prevost's choice to call himself Leo XIV "surprised me," Mamberti confesses. "I went back to his predecessors, I imagined that as an Augustinian he wanted to link himself to the great fathers of the Church, to Leo the Great. And then certainly to Leo XIII and the impulse he gave to doctrine and therefore to the social commitment of the Church."
Parolin's letter: "I was struck by his serenity in such intense moments"
"I believe I am not revealing any secrets if I write that a very long and warm applause followed that 'I accept' that made him the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church". Thus Cardinal Pietro Parolin, provisionally reconfirmed in these hours at the head of the Secretariat of State, in an open letter to the Giornale di Vicenza . Of Prevost, he confides, "what struck me most was the serenity that shone on his face in such intense and, in a certain sense, 'dramatic' moments, because they totally change a man's life". The nomination took place after very few ballots and now Leo XIV will immediately get to work.

"The new Pope," Parolin assures, "is well aware of the problems of today's world, as he demonstrated from his first words on the Loggia of St. Peter, referring immediately to 'disarmed and disarming' peace." Parolin recalls having had the opportunity "to collaborate directly with him in these last two years," after Pope Francis had called him to Rome to place him at the head of the Dicastery for Bishops. "I was able to experience in him knowledge of situations and people, calmness in argumentation, balance in proposing solutions, respect, attention and love for all."
"I believe that Pope Leo XIV, in addition to the grace of the Lord, will find in his great experience as a religious and pastor, as well as in the teaching and spirituality of the great Father Augustine, the resources to effectively carry out the ministry that the Lord has entrusted to him, for the good of the Church and of all humanity. We - concludes the Cardinal from Vicenza - are close to him with our affection, our obedience and our prayers"
The Pope meets the cardinals
Pope Prevost meets the cardinals in the Vatican this morning. The meeting, for a moment of dialogue and exchange, is taking place behind closed doors. The Vatican announced yesterday that Leo XIV has decided that the heads and members of the institutions of the Roman Curia, as well as the Secretaries and the President of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State, will continue, provisionally, in their respective roles 'donec aliter provideatur'. "The Holy Father wishes, in fact, to reserve a certain time for reflection, prayer and dialogue, before any definitive appointment or confirmation," the Vatican explained. Today the dialogue behind closed doors between Pope Prevost and his collaborators.
