Zeynep Sönmez advanced to the second round of the Merida Open Women's Tennis Tournament held in Mexico by defeating the 8th seeded Greek Maria Sakkari 2-0.

Zeynep, ranked 88th in the rankings, faced world number 30 Sakkari in the first round of the "hard court" tournament in Merida. The 22-year-old national tennis player, who won her first WTA tournament title in the Merida Open last season, won the match 7-5, 6-2. Zeynep will face world number 37 Magda Linette in the second round of the organization, which was upgraded from the WTA 250 to the 500 level this year.
