Earthquake panic in Balıkesir: Citizens set up tents in parks

A series of earthquakes have struck the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir province. According to information on the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) website, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 9:58 p.m. with its epicenter in Sındırgı. The earthquake was determined to have occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers.
Following the main tremor, two aftershocks, measuring 4.2 at 10:00 p.m. and 4.3 at 10:14 p.m., occurred. According to AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency), the 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 7 kilometers, and the 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 7.01 kilometers.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya issued a statement on social media following the earthquakes. In his statement, Yerlikaya said, “A 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Balıkesir's Sındırgı district. All teams from AFAD and relevant institutions immediately began field searches regarding the earthquake, which was also felt in surrounding provinces. Developments are being monitored. I offer my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May God protect our country and our nation from disasters.”
AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency) released a statement confirming that there were no adverse events following the earthquake. The statement read, "As of now, there are no adverse events following the 4.8 and 4.2 magnitude earthquakes that occurred at 9:58 PM and 10:00 PM in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir province. Field surveys are ongoing. We offer our best wishes to all affected citizens."
The earthquakes caused panic among many residents in the district. Following the tremors, some residents set up tents in parks to spend the night in safe open spaces.
