Consult your doctor, not artificial intelligence!

Artificial intelligence, used in many areas from phones to shopping habits, is also making headlines in healthcare. Using it for individual treatment poses serious risks. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sina Ferahman , a Breast Surgery Specialist at Medipol Acıbadem Regional Hospital, warned patients, "Artificial intelligence is not a treatment tool for home use; it is merely an aid to support physicians."
“ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS ALSO USED IN MEDICINE, BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS BIG”
Associate Professor Dr. Ferahman stated that artificial intelligence (AI) supports doctors in the evaluation of mammograms and MRI images, particularly in the diagnosis of breast cancer. However, he emphasized that the systems used in this field are very different from the AI models accessible to individuals, stating, “The AI we use are proprietary systems worth millions of dollars. However, AI applications used at home operate with open-source data and were not developed for medical purposes.”
MISINFORMATION CARRIES SERIOUS RISKS
Assoc. Prof. Ferahman, noting that some people who consulted AI for diet or treatment methods have recently faced mortal danger, said, “Artificial intelligence lags far behind current data. For example, a development in breast cancer treatment yesterday could impact our treatment today. But AI cannot reflect this. Furthermore, because it interprets only statistics, it can create anxiety in patients and impair treatment compliance.”
DOCTOR'S ASSISTANT
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ferahman stated that it is very dangerous for artificial intelligence to determine the lifespan of patients, saying, "Since two patients at the same stage have different psychological and social conditions, their lifespans can also be very different. Therefore, artificial intelligence can be an assistant to the doctor, but it cannot guide treatment."
