The death toll from Lassa fever, a disease transmitted from animals to humans in Nigeria, has risen to 162 this year.

In a statement made by the Nigerian Center for Disease Control, it was stated that Lassa fever cases continue to increase in 21 other states as well as the capital Abuja.

The number of cases has increased to 871

It was stated that 10 new Lassa cases were seen in the country between August 25-31, thus the number of Lassa cases between January 1-31 August increased to 871.

The statement stated that the number of people who lost their lives due to Lassa fever during the period in question rose to 162.

190 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES

The statement stated that the total number of suspected and confirmed cases in the country was lower compared to the same period last year, and warned of persistent risks.

Last year, 190 people died across the country due to the Lassa virus.

The Nigerian government declared a state of emergency due to Lassa fever on January 23, 2019.

WARNING FROM AUTHORITIES

Lassa fever, which is seen in many African countries such as Mali, Togo, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, was first detected in Nigeria in 1969 in the Borno state in the north-east of the country.

The disease, transmitted through contact with mouse droppings, can spread from person to person and causes fatal hemorrhagic fever.

Authorities are warning the public to avoid contact with mice and other rodents.
