Wimbledon Apologizes to Pavlyuchenkova for Technical Error During Match Against Kartal
Wimbledon has apologised to Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a technical error that occurred during her match against British tennis player Sonay Kartal in the fourth round, the BBC reports.
"The referee followed the established procedure. We have apologised to the players involved but remain fully confident in the accuracy of the ball tracking technology. There was human error in this instance and we have reviewed our processes and made changes accordingly," a spokesman for the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) said.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova reportedly reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon on Sunday, beating Sonay Kartal. The first set was marked by a controversial moment: the ball, according to many, went out of bounds, but the automatic system did not register it. The referee decided to replay, which caused discontent among Pavlyuchenkova, who claimed unfairness. It was later revealed that at that moment the Hawk-Eye system was switched off for unknown reasons.
