Guadiana Eurocity applies to the European Sports Community 2026

The municipalities of Ayamonte, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António presented a joint proposal for the Guadiana Eurocity to be distinguished as a European Sports Community in 2026, a recognition that the European Association of Sports Capitals and Cities (ACES Europe) awards annually to territories that stand out with projects that follow the ethical principles of sport.
The Eurocity of Guadiana presented a programming proposal that included several cross-border events, a set of calendar of sports promotion activities and sports for all, as well as different national and international events that take place in the territory.
Álvaro Araújo, president of the AECT Eurocidade do Guadiana, highlighted that “it is a relevant project for the world of sport, an area in which municipalities have cooperated and worked together for many years, being a territory in which so many cross-border events are organized as well as very important activities in the municipalities”.
This project is being developed in a coordinated manner between the Eurocity technical team and the Sports departments of the three municipalities, which are working on preparing the documentation and activity programmes, as well as organising the visit that the evaluation committee plans to carry out to the three territories involved.
The cooperation activities include the X Milhas do Guadiana, the swimming across the Guadiana River, the canoeing and several nautical events that take place annually. Also worthy of note are the joint programmes promoted in recent years, such as the EuroGuadiana Sport.
The community that receives this distinction undertakes, during the year of the award, to organize sporting events of notable national and international importance.
ACES Europe is a non-profit association created in 1999 with headquarters in Brussels that since 2001 has annually awarded the European Sports Capital, City, Community and Village under the auspices of the European Commission.
