Government criticizes Carlos Moedas: “Lisbon failed to provide accommodation for teachers”

The Minister of Education, Fernando Alexandre, criticized local authorities, and especially Lisbon City Council, regarding the failures in teacher accommodation.

In an interview with Antena 1's "Política com Assinatura" podcast, the governor warned the local authority led by Carlos Moedas that it needs to do much better when it comes to creating teacher accommodation, something that, according to Fernando Alexandre, has been failing in recent years.

"We have some areas of the country where housing costs are difficult, such as Greater Lisbon. Several municipalities offer housing for teachers, and it's important to note that municipalities make all the difference," Fernando Alexandre emphasized.

"In the case of housing, here in Greater Lisbon, there are a number of municipalities that provide good teacher integration, such as Oeiras and Cascais. Lisbon needs to make a significant investment, especially because there was a mistake made in assigning schools to parishes, and these parishes lack the capacity to provide this kind of attention," he said. The minister was emphatic: "The municipality of Lisbon must pay greater attention to schools."

On the eve of the start of the school year, the head of the Ministry of Education assured that "there is no shortage of teachers." Fernando Alexandre indicated that 20,000 teachers have not been placed and that the Ministry's needs are much smaller.

Regarding the twenty thousand unplaced teachers, the minister highlights that a large number of them are from the north of the country, above the Douro, and that they are not yet placed because they do not accept moving to the center and south and refuse incomplete schedules.
