The impact of tariff hikes on Brazilian exports to the US in August

Brazilian exports to the United States fell 18.5% in August compared to the same period in 2024, according to the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services. At the beginning of last month, the 50% tariff hike imposed by the Donald Trump administration came into effect.
Brazil sold $2.76 billion to the United States, compared to $3.39 billion in August of last year. Also considering Canada and Mexico, the decline was 9.95% in this period.
Imports of products from the United States reached $3.99 billion, an increase of 4.6% compared to August 2024. There was, therefore, a deficit of $1.23 billion last month, the largest monthly deficit this year.
Overall, however, the balance between exports and imports in August is positive for Brazil, amounting to almost $6.2 billion. The total is $29.9 billion exported and $23.7 billion imported. Year-to-date, the balance is positive at 42.8 billion.
