"We are in constant contact with the doctors. Two riders are very injured. We are praying that everything goes well and that no one is seriously injured, as one rider even lost consciousness. We are keeping our fingers crossed for them and wish them a speedy recovery [...] The peloton is vulnerable to all sorts of events. Here, we had a major crash. We used all the medical resources we had, several ambulances, everything to protect the riders involved in the crash. At one point, we didn't have an ambulance to continue the race. In such a situation, the race is neutralized, we stop it to wait for the ambulance to join us," explained TdP CEO Czesław Lang, explaining the reasons for the suspension.
Unfortunately, race runner-up Filippo Baroncini was severely injured in the crash. According to his UAE Emirates team, the Italian "suffered numerous facial injuries, a fractured cervical vertebra (with no neurological consequences), and multiple fractures to his facial bones and collarbone. He is currently in hospital under medical care."
