Seven Poles in the Grand Prix next year!? Revolution
But that's nothing compared to what Tai Woffinden has proposed. The legendary speedway rider posted on social media, proposing a fascinating division of seats for the 2026 Grand Prix.
On the one hand, it's a revolution, but on the other, it will certainly appeal to Polish fans.
Woffinden proposes a surprising solution. The three permanent wild cards awarded by the world speedway authorities after the season should, in his opinion, be given to Emil Sayfutdinov and Artem Łaguta, as well as the SGP 2 champion, who is likely to be... Pole Wiktor Przyjemski.
Sayfutdinov and Łaguta hold both Russian and Polish citizenship. They compete in the Polish league, but the Polish Motorsport Association (PZM) does not approve their participation in international competitions.
If Woffinden's request were granted, the aforementioned four Poles would be joined in the 2026 Grand Prix by three more Poles: Sayfutdinow, Łaguta, and Wiktor Przyjemski. This brings the total to seven Polish drivers among the 15 fully-fledged Grand Prix participants!
A few years ago, the then-head of the Polish Speedway Association, Andrzej Witkowski, envisioned such a World Championship, warning that Poles could dominate global speedway, which would ultimately be detrimental to the sport. Now Woffinden is proposing something similar.
One thing is certain, the speedway Grand Prix needs stars like Sayfutdinow or Łaguta, and the lack of these names (regardless of their nationality) weakens the series.
As for the SGP 2 champion (IMŚJ), years ago there was already a rule that the best junior in the world entered the senior Grand Prix.
Tai Woffinden's 2026 SGP
1) Places 1-7 from GP 2025
2) Places 1-4 from GP Challenge
3) European Champion
4) Artem Laguta and Emil Sayfutdinov (great comeback)
5) SGP 2 Champion (IMŚJ)
