The number of professionally active retirees is growing. Women decide to do so more often than men

Although retirement is associated with time for ourselves and our families, free from professional duties, this is not necessarily the case. Data from the Social Insurance Institution clearly indicate this. In the Podkarpacie region, it currently pays out almost 370,000 pensions. What's more, statistics show that over the last 9 years, the number of working retirees has increased by 51.7%. At the end of December 2015, there were 575.4 thousand professionally active retirees in Poland, while at the end of 2024, their number increased to 872.6 thousand. This is a significant jump.

Interestingly, women are more likely to decide to take up professional activity after retirement. They constituted 58.1% of working retirees. The only exception to this rule can be observed in the Silesian Voivodeship, where men predominate among working retirees (they constitute 52.7% of this group).

As W. Dyląg, regional spokesman for ZUS in Podkarpacie, says, almost 96.4 percent of working retirees are aged 60–65 and over.
