Sustainable nursery: Plukatelier

Plukatelier was founded out of a love of flowers and Jennita Jansen's desire to fill her life with beauty. Jennita is now a renowned cut-flower garden expert and grows organic cut flowers and seeds in her walled garden in Scherpenzeel. She has also written two books to encourage everyone to start growing their own flowers. You can find the nursery again this year at the Ambachtelijke Plantenmarkt (Artisan Plant Market) .

Plukatelier offers a wide, organic range for the pick-your-own garden: from its own line of flower seeds to fresh-cut flowers and plants. She applies a strict selection process to flowers (and their seeds): the flowers or decorative seed pods (such as those of the poppy) must last at least a week in a vase. Growing tiny seeds into plants, watching them grow into a sea of flowers, and then presenting the flowers to customers: that process, in harmony with nature, makes Jennita Jansen incredibly happy. Harvesting her own seeds completes the circle.
On September 27th and 28th, Plukatelier will be at the Artisanal Plant Market , the most sustainable plant event of the year. Will you be there at De Wiersse Estate in Vorden? Read more about Plukatelier's sustainable selection of plants at the market below.

Plukatelier's operations are completely organic and are inspected annually by Skal Biocontrole. Jennita is proud to offer an alternative "for anyone who, like me, loves flowers but also wants to be environmentally conscious." "With this seed line, I hope to contribute (or rather, seed) to a larger, more transparent, and accessible range of organic flower seeds." She summarizes her organic approach as follows:
- The flowers, plants and seeds are free from chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
- The flowers, plants and seeds grow outside, in the open ground, in the rhythm of nature.
- Almost all flowers are grown from seed.
- We use water responsibly; we only irrigate with groundwater.
- Great care is taken to maintain the soil, including crop rotation and the addition of organic material.
- The ecosystem and biodiversity are supported and encouraged. Because the nursery grows a wide variety of crops, including vegetables and flowers, beautiful mixed hedges, and fruit trees, it's a wonderful place for all living creatures.
At the nursery, Jennita uses "as little plastic as possible." "The flower support mesh is still nylon, because I haven't found a suitable alternative yet. But we reuse it every year. So far, it's lasted five years, which is really nice."
"Fresh flowers are packaged in paper instead of plastic sleeves," says Jennita. "Perennials are still in plastic P9 pots, but I'm experimenting with alternatives. Finding the right material and affordability is still a challenge."
We have copied this information as carefully as possible and edited it for readability, based on the contract signed and explained by the growers at the Craft Plant Market.
