If you're coming to Drenthe for the nursery anyway, you can make a fun weekend of it! Below, you'll find some interesting and beautiful places to visit nearby.
The Colonies of Benevolence were founded in 1818 as a social experiment against poverty and have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. The historic agricultural colony is still clearly visible around the nursery. The De Proefkolonie museum tells this story interactively, which is also fun for children. There are cycling and walking routes, and scavenger hunts in the area.
The first Dutch horticultural school, where growers Sietske and Micha learned the trade. The school is now closed, but since 2023 the gardens have been part of a heritage restoration project focusing on ecological management. You'll find initiatives for food transition, art, culture, and education. A green treasure trove full of unique plants and trees, definitely worth a visit!
Dolmens D53 and D54 are 9 km away in the Holtingerveld nature reserve. Informative walking trails lead through the Drenthe landscape. You can relax at the Tea House 't Hunebed.
A natural history museum with treasures from the sea. This remarkable masterpiece by Jeanne Warners is truly worth a visit!
Arborealis Nursery is located between three national parks: Drents-Friese Wold, Dwingelderveld, and Weerribben-Wieden. It's an ideal base for nature lovers.
