Tens of thousands of Dutch Citroën drivers are not allowed to drive on the road by manufacturer after airbag problems

More than 33,000 Citroën drivers in the Netherlands are no longer allowed to use their car due to airbag problems. Stellantis, Citroën's parent company, is calling on users to leave their car at home. Last week, a woman died in France from injuries caused by these airbags.
This French woman was driving a 2014 Citroën C3. The problem was caused by an airbag from Japanese Takata. Stellantis is urging drivers to stop using C3 and DS3 Citroëns produced between 2009 and 2019 until the problem has been resolved. On this site, car owners can check whether their Citroën is affected by the recall.
Since 2014, many cars with Takata airbags have been recalled, including in the Netherlands. The Japanese Takata went bankrupt three years later. The airbags could explode due to a production error, throwing metal particles through the car. Several drivers worldwide have died as a result.
A spokesperson for the carmaker said airbags "cannot deploy spontaneously."
Previous problems as wellEarlier this year, more than 45,000 Citroëns of those types were recalled to the garage in the Netherlands because of problems with the airbag in question. This recall seemed somewhat less urgent.

The Netherlands was the last country to be recalled, as countries with warm and humid climates were given priority. There, the risk of airbag problems was greater. The company did not consider it necessary for owners of the affected cars to stop driving as a precaution.
Citroën owners can now check via the website or dealer whether their car is also being recalled. According to Stellantis, which also includes Peugeot, Fiat and Opel, dealers will also contact drivers themselves.
