Trump breaks off trade talks with Canada over TV ad

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said on social media today he will end “all trade negotiations” with Canada due to its recent television ads protesting U.S. tariffs, which he called “ egregious behavior ” aimed at influencing U.S. federal court decisions.
The post came after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he aims to double Canada's exports to countries outside the United States due to the threat posed by tariffs ordered by Trump.

Just last October 7, during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to Washington , Trump floated the possibility of revising or replacing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement ( USMCA ), and listed trade tensions and tariffs that could affect it.
At that meeting, Trump offered no assurances about maintaining the USMCA as it is and reiterated his habit of conditioning it on U.S. interests, fueling interpretations that it could be distorted or limited.
Furthermore, the Trump administration opened the possibility of establishing separate trade agreements with Mexico and Canada .
Days before Carney's visit to Washington, some Canadian politicians had suggested abandoning the trilateral agreement and seeking a direct pact with the United States , considering that Mexico represents a weak point in the regional economy.
Earlier today, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney challenged U.S. President Donald Trump to a friendly bet on the outcome of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers .
However, Carney said Trump has yet to return his call about the potential bid.
“I think he’s scared, I think he’s scared to make a bet,” Carney joked to The Associated Press while attending batting practice at Toronto’s Rogers Centre the day before Game 1 of the World Series in Toronto.
“He doesn't like to lose. He hasn't called. He hasn't returned my call about the bet yet, so I'm ready. We're ready to make a bet with the United States.”
Carney predicted the Blue Jays would win the best-of-seven series in six games.
“This country is very excited. I think the world is very excited about this series,” said Carney, who emphasized the interest in Japan for Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani.
Canada's only major league team will have the entire country rooting for it during the World Series.
