The Municipality of Varese also constitutes itself as a civil party in the criminal trial related to the Hydra investigation , the maxi investigation into the Lombard mafia system rooted in various sectors of the economy of several cities, including the territories of Milan and Varese. The Municipal Council, in the session of May 15, has in fact deliberated the constitution.

With the Decree that has set the hearing at the Court of Milan for next May 20, the Municipality of Varese, by constituting itself as a civil party, will also be able to support the valuable work of the judiciary and the police forces to eradicate the presence of organized crime in our territory as well as to obtain compensation for the damages caused directly and indirectly to the image of the city.

The trial involving the three mafia families

The maxi-trial “Hydra” represents one of the most significant judicial proceedings against organized crime in Lombardy , bringing to light an alleged criminal consortium involving members of Cosa Nostra, 'Ndrangheta and Camorra . The investigation, coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) of Milan, led to the indictment of 143 defendants, accused of being part of a Lombard mafia system that allegedly operated through extortion, drug trafficking, money laundering and infiltration of public contracts.

The trial, which began in May 2025 in the bunker courtroom of Opera prison, is expected to last several months, given the complexity of the case and the large number of defendants. The hearings are characterized by testimonies that highlight the modus operandi of mafia organizations, their control over the territory and the strategies adopted to infiltrate the economic and social fabric of Lombardy.
