The jersey offered by Victor Wembanyama to a young fan sold for 70,000 euros at auction

"The best trade in history!" commented the San Antonio (Texas) club. On December 27, 2024, at the end of a match between the Spurs and the Brooklyn Nets, a little boy managed to capture the attention of the rising French NBA star. He held a sign that read: "Victor Wembanyama, could you trade your jersey for mine?" Result: the child left with the jersey, a limited edition almost taller than him, and the basketball player with a tiny version.
But less than a month later, on January 14, the American auction house Goldin announced that it had recovered the jersey and was putting it up for auction with a starting price of $10,000. An announcement that disappointed Wemby, who made this known by posting a crying emoji on the social network X.

The auction ended on February 23, and the jersey went for $73,200 to an undisclosed buyer. An amount that may seem high but is still far from some historical sales of objects belonging to athletes. In 2022, a Diego Maradona jersey was sold for more than $9 million, the bidding rose to more than $10 million for the one worn by Michael Jordan during the NBA Finals in 1998.
Since the jersey was given to a fan, many Internet users were moved to see it put up for sale. They see these auctions as a sad conclusion after a moment of generosity that only sport can create. "Each family makes its own choices," replied Ken Goldin, the head of the auction house, who rather sees it as a way for the family to facilitate the little boy's access to university.
