United Kingdom: Jeremy Corbyn follows in Mélenchon's footsteps with his new radical left party
A feeling of déjà vu? By breaking with Labour, of which he was the leader, to give birth to a new political movement , Jeremy Corbyn is following in the footsteps of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and claiming it. Your Party is the (provisional) name given to this formation launched in the United Kingdom on Thursday, July 24, jointly by the figure of the left wing of the Labour Party and the MP Zarah Sultana.
A maneuver that is reminiscent of the break between former senator Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the Socialist Party in 2008 to create the Left Party. At the time, he said he had "the ambition to reinvent the left." Seventeen years later, Mr. Corbyn is no less boastful: "It 's time to create a new kind of political party. One that belongs to you."
The "rebellious" leader quickly applauded the birth of Your Party, seeing a parallel with his strategy. "Thank you, Jean-Luc! We are inspired by your success. Solidarity," wrote Mr. Corbyn in response to a congratulatory message from his French counterpart on the social network X: "In 48 hours, a rebellious England has emerged at the call of Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana. In 48 hours, 400,000 people have given their support. The first condition for success has been met: breaking with Labour, its lies, its neoliberalism, and its rotten affiliation with Tony Blair, and moving forward autonomously and independently. Bravo Jeremy and Zarah! Bravo, free English people!"
