Argentina's Milei renews attacks on Spanish PM during Madrid visit

Argentina's libertarian President Javier Milei on Sunday renewed his expletive-laden criticism of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, calling him a "crook" during a visit to Madrid for an economic forum.

The speech marked the latest escalation in tensions between the two leaders, who clashed last year when Milei suggested Sánchez's wife was "corrupt", prompting Madrid to recall its ambassador from Buenos Aires.

Milei spoke Sunday night at the Madrid Economic Forum, a libertarian gathering.

As rock music played and some attendees shouted insults aimed at Sánchez, Milei gestured energetically and took a swipe at the Spanish leader.

"If you want to rough up the local crook too, I've got no problem with it," Milei said, referring to Sánchez.

Spain's Alcaraz stuns Sinner in all-time great French Open final

Carlos Alcaraz saved three championship points as he produced an astonishing fightback from two sets down to beat Jannik Sinner in a French Open final for the ages on Sunday.

Reigning champion Alcaraz rallied from the brink of defeat to overcome world number one Sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (10/2) after five hours and 29 minutes to clinch his fifth Grand Slam title.

The 22-year-old Spaniard is now unbeaten in five Grand Slam finals after snapping Sinner's 20-match winning run at the majors.

"This was the most exciting match that I've played so far without a doubt," said Alcaraz. "I think the match had everything."

Alcaraz pulled off his first ever comeback from two sets down in the longest Roland Garros final in history, recovering from 5-3 down in the fourth set when Sinner had three match points.

Spain condemns Colombian politician's assassination attempt

Spain on Sunday condemned the attempted assassination of a Colombian right-wing opposition senator and candidate in next year's presidential election, saying "violence has no place in our societies".

"Spain conveys its best wishes for a speedy recovery to the victim and all its solidarity to his family and friends, as well as to the Colombian people," the Spanish foreign ministry added in a statement.

Colombian senator Miguel Uribe was speaking to supporters in the capital when a gunman shot him twice in the head and once in the knee.

A security guard managed to detain the suspected attacker, a minor believed to be 15 years old.

Uribe was airlifted to hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery for his wounds, the Santa Fe Clinic in Bogota said.

Portugal beat Spain on penalties to win Nations League

Spain led twice but were twice pegged back before the match went to extra time with scores locked at 2-2.

After each side converted their first three penalties, Spain forward Alvaro Morata's effort was saved by Diogo Costa and Portugal's Ruben Neves converted to win the shootout 5-3.

Spain won the 2023 Nations League and the Euros in 2024. Sunday's loss was their first competitive international defeat since going down to Scotland in March 2023 in a Euro qualifier.
