Puebla, ready to host Day of the Dead festivities

This Day of the Dead season, the state of Puebla expects the arrival of more than 900,000 visitors and an approximate economic impact of 1 billion pesos , federal, state and local authorities indicated.
During the presentation of the 2025 edition of the State Encounter Between the Living and the Dead , which will take place until November 3, the importance of these festivities at the national and international level was highlighted.
The federal Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, recalled that Day of the Dead is an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO , making it Mexico's biggest tourism product; more than 400 events are planned throughout the country, of which Puebla hosts 45.
He also noted that from January to August 2025, the state of Puebla registered 8% more visitors than the same period of the previous year and a 10% increase in flights, while the tourism GDP amounted to 7.9 percent.
Next weekend, Mexico is expected to generate an economic impact of 31 billion pesos and the arrival of 1.8 million tourists .
The head of the local Tourism Development Secretariat , Carla López-Malo Villalón, highlighted that for these Day of the Dead festivities they project that the arrival of visitors will be 12% higher than that registered in the 2024 season, while the economic impact will be 17% more than the previous year; of the more than 900,000 tourists, 20 to 30% are foreigners.
He outlined some of the activities in various municipalities, such as Atlixco , where the Valley of the Catrinas will take place; in Chignahuapan , the Festival of Light and Life ; and in Tochimilco , the monumental altars , whose cost ranges from 15 to 80,000 pesos per unit. A total of 190 tourist experiences are planned.
“The Festival of Light and Life in the municipality of Chignahuapan is an unmissable event, a key part of these festivities,” added Josefina Rodríguez.
Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier emphasized that the season is of utmost importance to the state's tourism sector.
During the current administration, he said, the average length of stay increased from 1.5 to 1.8 nights, so the goal is to reach 2 nights.
“Puebla is prepared to host major events. Community-based tourism is fundamental (…) There is coordination with all agencies to ensure that all visitors are cared for and attended to; security is key,” he elaborated.
