News daily 24 > John Kinsel Sr., a prominent Navajo Code Talker, passes away at 107Oct. 20 (UPI) -- John Kinsel Sr., a revered Navajo Code Talker renowned for sending coded messages for the U.S. military during WWII, has passed away at the age of 107. His contributions to the military were vital, as he used the unique Navajo language to develop an unbreakable code that significantly aided U.S. forces.
Both the Navajo Nation and the U.S. Marines confirmed his death on Saturday, stating he died peacefully in his sleep.
This recognition of Kinsel's service came from President Buu Nygren, who expressed gratitude for his bravery and selflessness during the war. Kinsel participated in significant battles, including Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima.
Kinsel's legacy endures as he was part of a historic group of nearly 400 Navajo Code Talkers, whose ingenious use of their native language prevented enemy forces from deciphering crucial military communications. His efforts, alongside those of fellow Code Talkers, played a pivotal role in the success of military operations.
In honor of Kinsel, all flags on the Navajo Nation will be flown at half-staff until October 27. Following his passing, only two Navajo Code Talkers remain: Peter McDonald and Thomas H. Begay.
