BRITISH women need to start having twice as many babies to save the human race, experts say.

Boffins claim the minimum to avoid extinction is 2.7 babies per woman worldwide.

Britain’s average is 1.44. The global figure is an estimated 2.3.

Diane Cuaresma, author of the Japanese study, said the adjusted figure is higher than the long-held rate of 2.1 to account for early deaths and childless women.

She said: “Since fertility rates are below this in developed countries, almost all family line-ages are destined to go extinct.”

Fertility rates have declined since the 20th century.

As countries get richer, women become more likely to prioritise work over being a stay-at-home mum.

Children also have better survival rates so families do not need to be as large.

In England and Wales the fertility rate is the lowest on record — halving from 1964’s peak of 2.93 to 1.44 in 2023.

But it is projected to grow because of net migration.

The Office for National Statistics also says women are having babies at older ages so the true fertility rate of current generations may rise over time.

Tech mogul and high birth rate advocate Elon Musk is said to have fathered at least 14 kids.

He said in 2022: “Population collapse due to low birth rates is a much bigger risk to civilisation than global warming.”

The world population has doubled since the 1970s to eight billion.

Experts say it will take years for a low birth rate to feed through to reverse its growth.
