Gary Melia, Station Commander for the London Fire Brigade, told LBC: "The investigation is going on at the moment. The fire investigators have come here, they've been interviewing the first firefighters and they'll start to build a picture before they can actually go into the scene."

The fire service has said it expects to remain at the scene throughout the day.

A baby has been treated for smoke inhalation after being evacuated from the large fire at the BBC's former Television Centre, according to LBC.

"At the moment, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported," the broadcaster reported. "Officers were unable to say how long they think it will take to get the fire under control."

The BBC's former Television Centre made international headlines in 2001 when the Real IRA detonated a car bomb outside the building. The broadcaster was warned ahead of the attack and all staff in the building were evacuated. A police robot failed to disarm the bomb, however, and part of the now-demolished News Centre extension was damaged in the incident.

One person was treated by paramedics then discharged at the scene of the fire, according the London Ambulance Service.

A spokesperson said: "We were called at 3.13am today to reports of a fire on Wood Lane in White City.

“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an incident response officer and our hazardous area response team.

“We have treated one patient and discharged them at the scene.

“The incident is ongoing and we remain on scene as a precaution, working closely with our emergency services partners.”

According to the Helios Building website, it accommodates 162 homes, a 47-bedroom hotel and a gym.

The fire service said floors towards the top of the former BBC Television Centre were alight as of 8am, with a restaurant, external decking and ducting impacted by the blaze, alongside an "unknown number of flats".

Emergency services confirmed that a number of people had been evacuated, but no information has yet emerged regarding injuries or casualties.

Isabela Brooker, who lives on the seventh floor of the Helios Building, said she was evacuated by fire services with her eight-and-a-half month old sold Rafeal at 4:30am.

"We heard a knock on the door and it was the fire brigade telling us to evacuate," she told the BBC.

"There was smoke all in the corridor - it was very scary. I left everything and we're now down here in our pyjamas. I have no nappies and nothing else."

Wood Lane has been shut by emergency services between the Wood Lane and White City underground stations as firefighters continue to tackle the blaze in West London.

Buses 75, 95, 220, 272 and 228 are also being diverted.

The London Fire Brigade has warned people to steer clear of the area, with firefighters expected to remain on scene throughout the day.

Firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze at the broadcaster's old base in White City. New photos show white smoke pouring out of the mixed-use building, which appears to adjoin a residential housing block.

The nine storey building was the BBC's Television Centre headquarters from the 1990s until 2013, when it was part of the broadcaster's 'Media Village'. The BBC is now based at Broadcasting House in central London.

The 'village' was the base of most of the BBC's current affairs and factual programmes, including Panorama, Topgear and Watchdog. It was sold to developers in 2015 and renamed 'White City Place'. The former Television Centre is now known as the Helios Building.

Wood Lane has been closed to traffic and people advised to avoid the area as emergency services ramp up efforts to fight the fire.

"The incident will remain ongoing for some time, with crews expected on scene throughout the day," the London Fire Brigade said.

"The Brigade was called at 3:08am and Control Officers have mobilised crews from Hammersmith, North Kensington, Kensington, Chiswick and surrounding fire stations to the scene.

"Two 32-metre turntable ladders are also attending and are being deployed as water towers to help extinguish the fire from height. The Brigade's drone team is also in attendance, providing the Incident Commander with a greater situational awareness of the fire."
