A busy part of Oxford Street east, already slow with construction, will be even more of a traffic nightmare starting Monday, when the intersection of Second Street closes for underground work.

Second and Oxford Street will be closed to through traffic for two weeks as construction continues on the eastern link of the bus rapid transit project.

Drivers should follow posted signs and take the following detours:

  • Oxford Street detour: Highbury Avenue to Huron Street to Clarke Road.
  • Second Street detour: Cheapside Street to Third Street to Dundas Street.

Businesses will remain open and pedestrians will still be allowed in the closed section, city officials say. Local traffic will also be allowed.

"During this time, people driving through the area are advised to travel with caution in the construction zone and when visiting local destinations or businesses," city officials wrote in a statement.

The ongoing strike by Fanshawe College support workers has meant picket lines on Cheapside Street and Fanshawe College Boulevard. "This may cause additional delays for drivers and pedestrians near the campus," officials warned.

The bus entrance and exit on Oxford Street will be blocked, and some transit routes will be impacted by the construction. Transit users are advised to check the London Transit website or Twitter.

The East London Link is a multi-year construction project on 6km of road from Downtown to Fanshawe College. Aging sewers and other underground infrastructure are being replaced, and rapid transit bus lanes are being added. The East Link is expected to be completed in 2026.
