Huron County farmer charged in theft of 45,000 chicks that he reported missing

After a two-year investigation, police have laid charges in the theft of 45,000 chicks at a Huron County farm against the farmer who first reported them missing.
In April 2023, Huron police received a report that 30,000 15-day-old chickens were stolen from a South Huron farm sometime overnight.
The total number of stolen chicks was later revised to 45,000, making the total monetary loss worth more than $139,000, police said.
Huron police arrested and charged the original complainant, a 41-year-old South Huron farmer, with fraud and public mischief on Tuesday. He is scheduled to appear in court in May.
Huron police are encouraging anyone with additional information on the incident to contact them at (519) 482-1677 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
