Methane gas fire in Kartepe on its 9th day

On February 17, around 14:00, during drilling work at a depth of approximately 47 meters in the metro construction site on Bedir Street in Dumlupınar Neighborhood in Kartepe , methane gas that rose to the surface flared up. Upon notification, AFAD, fire department, health and police teams were dispatched to the scene. The teams took security measures in the area by drawing up a cordon.
On February 18, firefighters extinguished the flames with a fire blanket, while the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) and the Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council
Expert teams from the Research Institution (TÜBİTAK) came to the region and took samples. After the samples were taken, firefighters reignited the fire in a controlled manner.
While the fire has been going on for 9 days, teams continue their work in the area.
