WhatsApp introduces a new solution for spam messages

One of the biggest problems plaguing WhatsApp users is spam messages. The company is apparently concerned that this spam problem will worsen, especially since it's experimenting with a username subscription system alongside a number system, and is working to find a solution. According to reports, this new system aims to prevent a single person or business from sending numerous missed messages in a single month.
In the new system, messages sent by both individual accounts and businesses that are not opened by the recipient will count towards this limit. This means that if you don't respond to a message, the system will consider it spam after a certain period of time. Consecutive unread messages sent to the same person will also be counted towards this limit. However, when the recipient replies to the messages, the counter for that user will be reset. WhatsApp will display a warning to account owners when the limit is approaching.
New solution for unwanted messages
The company states that it's testing different limits to ensure the message limit doesn't impact regular users. The goal isn't to limit daily users, but rather to stop spam accounts and businesses that send high volumes of messages. The feature will reportedly begin testing in many countries in the coming weeks.
WhatsApp, under the Meta umbrella, has recently taken a series of steps to combat spam and scams. Last year, it introduced an option to block marketing messages from businesses, and this summer, it introduced a security feature that notifies users if someone not in their contacts adds them to a group. WhatsApp also announced that it banned 6.8 million accounts linked to scams in the first half of 2025 alone.
This new WhatsApp limit is a welcome move for users bombarded with spam messages. If the testing proves effective, it wouldn't be surprising if this feature becomes mandatory worldwide soon.
