Bread prices are rising in Istanbul

The Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) Board of Directors presented its proposal for a new maximum price tariff for bread in Istanbul to the Chamber Assembly at its July assembly meeting.

According to the proposal, the maximum price of 1 kilogram of bread in Istanbul is set at 75 TL, while the maximum price of 200 grams is set at 15 TL. Last December, the price of 200 grams of bread was set at 12.5 TL.

A 10 percent increase was proposed for the Princes' Islands district. The decision, taken at the Board of Directors' meeting on July 7, 2025, was brought to Parliament for approval. Once the decision-making process is complete, the new tariff will be the official maximum price in Istanbul. With the 10 percent increase proposed for the Princes' Islands, the price of 200 grams of bread could reach up to 16.5 TL.

According to ekonomim.com, the tariffs are expected to take effect following approval by the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO) Assembly. Bakers' recent requests for price updates due to rising costs in Istanbul have become a topic of public debate.

PRICE CAN BE INCREASED IF WEIGHT INCREASES The different prices applied in many bakeries sparked debate in parliament. Following the discussions, Selim Şimşek, Vice Chairman of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) Bread, Flour, and Bakery Products Professional Committee, took to the podium, pointing out that the maximum price is the upper price limit that can be applied to bread, saying, “Companies can sell below this price, but they cannot exceed it. Another detail is the kg price when determining the price. So, if bread costs 75 TL per kg, 200 grams of bread costs 15 TL. 240 grams of bread can be sold for 18 TL. This is suitable. Kara bakeries have difficulty making 200 grams. 200 grams of bread looks like a sandwich. Therefore, 240 grams of bread is made, and this can be sold for 18 TL. Bread can be produced in different weights, provided that it complies with the bread circular. If there is no difference in weight, you can complain. The Provincial Directorate of Trade conducts price inspections.”

On the other hand, recently the price of bread was increased again in businesses affiliated with the Chamber of Bakers and the price was applied in a similar manner to the ITO.
