45 thousand people die every year in Türkiye for this reason!

Prof. Dr. Murat Terzi, a faculty member in the Department of Neurology at OMÜ Faculty of Medicine and President of the Turkish Neurological Association, stated that an unbalanced diet can also lead to serious health problems in stroke and brain diseases, saying, “Such a deadly and disabling disease is actually preventable. Of course, there are factors we can't prevent, such as age or genetic predisposition. However, there are also risk factors we can control. Chief among these is nutrition. Avoiding salty and fatty foods and opting for a Mediterranean diet rich in vegetables and fruits becomes even more important, especially after age 60. Regular exercise is also a critical protective factor. Walking or engaging in physical activity two or three days a week can significantly reduce the risk of stroke. Furthermore, it's important to avoid habits like smoking and alcohol.”
'RESEARCH SHOW THAT 1 IN 6 PEOPLE IS AT RISK OF HAVING A STROKE'Professor Dr. Murat Terzi emphasized the importance of controlling risk factors for stroke and paralysis, stating, “Cerebrovascular diseases are among the most common neurological disorders in Türkiye, as well as worldwide. These diseases are a significant cause of disability and death. Generally, we classify cerebrovascular diseases into two groups: cerebrovascular occlusions and brain hemorrhages. The most common condition is cerebrovascular occlusions. We colloquially call these strokes or strokes. These diseases, the second leading cause of death after heart disease, claim the lives of approximately 45,000 people in Türkiye each year. Other controllable risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Treating these factors plays a significant role in stroke prevention. Research shows that one in six people, especially in a certain age group, is at risk of stroke. Therefore, controlling these risk factors is absolutely essential.”
'REACHING THE HOSPITAL QUICKLY IS VERY CRITICAL'Prof. Dr. Terzi stated that the first 6-8 hours are of vital importance in the event of a stroke, and continued:
Türkiye's healthcare system is significantly integrated in this regard. Thanks to the 112 emergency line, emergency services, and neurology clinics, patients are quickly referred to appropriate centers. The first 6-8 hours are crucial. Early intravenous medication or angiography to open blocked arteries can significantly impact a patient's quality of life. Therefore, rapid hospitalization is crucial. Additionally, patients are prescribed blood thinners, cholesterol-lowering medications, and blood pressure and diabetes medications. Brain CT scans, carotid artery imaging, and cardiac examinations are also performed to investigate the underlying causes of stroke. If there is a heart rhythm disorder or other problem, this also needs to be treated. If there is a serious blockage in the vessels leading to the brain, stent placement or surgical intervention may be necessary. Rehabilitation is crucial in the post-stroke period. Patients may develop symptoms such as weakness, imbalance, and speech disorders. At this point, the goal is to improve both physical and cognitive functions through physical therapy, rehabilitation, and speech-language therapies. (DHA)
