A university student's monthly expenses exceed twice the minimum wage

According to research by Eğitim-İş, the monthly cost of attending university in three major cities exceeds twice the minimum wage. A student wishing to study abroad faces a fixed monthly expense of 50,000 TL, including accommodation and basic expenses.

The biggest burden for students was accommodation

Housing posed the biggest burden on education. Private dormitory fees averaged 38,500 lira in Ankara, 40,000 lira in Istanbul, and 29,000 lira in Izmir. For students renting a home, the average rent in Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir was 25,000 lira. Those wishing to rent a home must also pay a deposit.

Eating out and socializing is expensive

A student's monthly meal expenses reached 12,000 TL. Even socializing over a single coffee or tea cost 6,000 TL per month. A student's monthly transportation subscription cost 350 TL in Ankara, 380 TL in Istanbul, and 480 TL in Izmir.

The cost of renting is getting heavier for students

For students living at home, electricity, water, natural gas, internet, and student fees cost an average of 3,000 TL annually. For educational materials, books cost 2,500 TL, and stationery costs 670 TL. Students who want to buy a computer have to pay an average of 30,000 TL.

The cost of starting university exceeds 100 thousand lira

Eğitim-İş announced that the start-up costs exceeded 105,000 TL, while the monthly fixed expenses were at least 50,000 TL, more than twice the minimum wage.
