Cappadocia history from scratch

Excavations in Göreme could change the course of history. Excavations on the Göreme Open Air Museum road, which was closed to traffic in 2022, have unearthed remains that push Cappadocia's history back another 500 years. Nearly 50 tombs were discovered during the excavations. Excavations on the Göreme-Ortahisar highway in Nevşehir revealed that the site dates back to the 5th century AD. The work, conducted under the direction of the Nevşehir Museum Directorate and under the scientific consultancy of Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University, uncovered a vast necropolis containing rock-cut tombs, living quarters, cellars, and approximately 50 graves. The excavations also revealed that architectural stones used in past periods were repurposed in tomb construction in subsequent centuries, thus pushing the region's known history back hundreds of years.
