A Valley of Science and Culture for Muğla: Cengiz Bektaş Museum Rises

The project, chaired by İlber Ortaylı, offers an education-based museum model focusing on children and local development.

The Cengiz Bektaş Museum, launched by the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, stands out for its structure that transcends classical museum practices. Led by Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı, one of Türkiye's leading historians, the project is designed not only as an exhibition space but also as a multifaceted educational and cultural center.

Developed under the leadership of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Aras, the project takes its name from architect and author Cengiz Bektaş. Beyond perpetuating Bektaş's legacy, the museum aims to pass on the region's historical and cultural heritage to future generations.

Library Support from Ortaylı

The project's scientific and cultural depth is broadened by İlber Ortaylı's contributions. Ortaylı not only strengthens the museum's academic infrastructure by donating his personal library to the project, but also directly guides the center's vision by serving as chairman of the executive board.

Interactive Education Model

The museum stands out with its educational programs and interactive presentations, particularly geared toward children. Twenty-four interactive screens will enrich the exhibits with digital narratives, providing visitors with an active learning experience. Special children's sections within the museum will host fun, educational, and science-based activities.

Additionally, model projects and replica statues based on archaeological excavations conducted by universities will connect visitors with history. Documentary and short film screenings will add a visual dimension to historical information.

Local Products in the Museum Showcase

Another goal of the Cengiz Bektaş Museum is to contribute to the regional economy. Olives, honey, and various endemic species will be showcased in designated areas within the museum. This aims to combine natural resources with cultural value and increase the economic participation of the local community.

In addition to introducing the fauna and flora of the region, the museum will make these natural values visible as economic elements.

A Vision of a City Growing with Culture

The project aims to transform Muğla into a city that stands out not only for its natural beauty but also for its investments in culture and science. This cultural island, rising under the leadership of İlber Ortaylı, will serve as a school that transmits the knowledge of the past to future generations.

The museum is scheduled to open in 2026. Once opened, it is expected to stand out not only as a popular destination but also as a model to inspire Türkiye's education and cultural policies.
