A campaign has been launched today against the demolition of the Antalya Museum, one of Turkey's most important archaeological museums, on the grounds of "reconstruction."
Visitors who wanted to enter the museum in the morning were told by security guards that the museum was closed at 08:30.
Visitors were informed that a notice would be posted stating that the museum was closed, and only staff were allowed inside.
The Museum Working Group made a statement about the Antalya Museum, which was decided to be demolished without informing the public.
In the statement, it was announced that a campaign was launched on Change.org in response to the demolition decision regarding the museum.
It was stated that the demolition decision was taken in the middle of the tourist season, without any schedule, without any notification, and without sharing it with the public.
The statement, which emphasized that the museum, which is stated to be rebuilt, is "a school, a memory store and a cultural bridge," listed the demands as follows:
- Not closing the Antalya Museum,
- Sharing the schedule, budget and project details of the construction process with the public,
If closure is necessary, alternative solutions such as staged restoration and temporary exhibition areas should be evaluated.
- The entire process must be carried out in a transparent, participatory and cultural heritage-sensitive manner.
Meanwhile, a protest will be held today against the closure of the museum, with the participation of professional organizations, unions and non-governmental organizations.
The protest, organized under the leadership of the Museum Working Group, will take place in front of the Antalya Museum at 18:00.
