The title of the 18th Istanbul Biennial: Three-Legged Cat
The title and conceptual framework of the 18th Istanbul Biennial, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) with the support of the 2007–2036 Biennial Sponsor Koç Holding, was announced at a press conference at the historical Beyoğlu Sports Club building on Tuesday, February 25.
At the press conference, which began with the opening speech of Istanbul Biennial Director Kevser Güler, curator Christine Tohmé shared her curatorial approach with the participants and announced that the title of the biennial was "Three-Legged Cat".
The first leg of the biennial, which can also be visited free of charge, will be shaped around the themes of self-preservation and future possibilities.

The first leg of the 18th Istanbul Biennial will be held between 20 September and 23 November 2025. Press previews will be held between 16–19 September 2025, and professional previews will be held between 18–19 September 2025.
The history of Beyoğlu Sports Club, where the press conference was held, dates back to 1877.
Founded by Greeks from Istanbul under the name Ermis, the club was renamed Athlitikos Sillogos Pera in 1886 and Peraclub in 1914. With the foundation of the Republic, its name became Beyoğlu Sports Club. The venue, which will also host various performances as part of the 18th Istanbul Biennial, also includes a museum shedding light on the deep-rooted history of Beyoğlu Sports Club, one of the milestones of sports history.

THE THREE-LEGGED CAT
In her curatorial text, Christine Tohmé explains the structure of the biennial, which spans three years, as follows:
"The 18th Istanbul Biennial, which stretches from 2025 to 2027 on three legs, resembles a cat in every way. It stretches in time and keeps its feet on the ground; it adopts a rhythm nourished by conversations, exercises and a constant flow of news.
Centered on self-preservation and future possibilities as themes, the first leg of the biennial presents performances, screenings, and talks, along with an exhibition of works by more than 40 artists, from September 20 to November 23, 2025.

The second leg in 2026 focuses on creating an academy and developing a range of public programs in collaboration with local initiatives.
In 2027, the biennial will rest on its third leg, completing with a final exhibition and workshop program that brings together what it has encountered along the way.
