Location: Antalya! Proven with satellite photos: Those who do these things are cutting the branch they are sitting on

The jetty-shaped piers used by hotels in many parts of the city and built by filling the sea have been documented with satellite photos. The state of Antalya's coast before and after the piers were built has been revealed with satellite photos. Piers that block the sea currents of the place where they are built also harm the marine ecosystem. It has been seen that the piers in some points were built by filling the sea approximately 150 meters from the shore. It is seen in the satellite photos that there are sun loungers and closed lodges on the piers.

'IT CAUSES THE WATER TO HEAT'

Stating that the piers harm the marine ecosystem, Akdeniz University Faculty of Fisheries Academician Prof. Dr. Mehmet Gökoğlu said, “In some of the filled areas, the piers were built on sea grasses (Posidonia Oceanica). Attention should have been paid to these and this should not have happened. It also blocks the coastal currents. While the piers were being built, they destroyed many living spaces and because they blocked the currents, they also held the pollution. Since there is no water circulation, they also caused the water to warm up. When we look towards the Alanya region, we see this in front of most of the hotels.”

'THE SEA IS BEING DAMAGED'

Prof. Dr. Gökoğlu, who stated that the piers also harm the sea because they block the current, said, “Those who do this cut the branch they are sitting on. The sea is damaged because there is no current. The Mediterranean is already warming up, the water temperature reaches 30 degrees in the summer. There is also a possibility of harmful organisms forming here due to this pollution. When these come into contact with those who enter the sea, they cause itching and burning. They cause an increase in microorganisms together with the pollution. There are piers with legs, but they do not block the current. They do not have as much effect as those built in the form of breakwaters.”
