Bread prices increased in Istanbul: New prices announced

Bread prices have risen again in Istanbul. A new proposal submitted to Parliament by the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce ( ITO ) has caused a significant increase in bread prices across Istanbul. A 200-gram loaf can now be sold for as little as 15 TL. A higher price tag has been set for the Adalar district.

NEW MAXIMUM PRICE SCHEDULE HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED

At its July meeting, the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) Board of Directors proposed a new maximum price tariff for bread in Istanbul. This proposal sets the maximum price for 1 kilogram of bread in Istanbul at 75 TL. This price, combined with the current price, now stands at 15 TL for 200 grams of bread. The price of bread, which was 12.5 TL last December, has now increased by approximately 20% to 15 TL.

The tariff for the Princes' Islands district of Istanbul is expected to increase by 10 percent. This could see the price of 200 grams of bread on the Princes' Islands rise to 16.5 Turkish Lira. This increase in bread prices on the Princes' Islands is determined by local conditions and costs.

THE REASON FOR THE INCREASE IN COSTS

This recent surge in bread prices is believed to be due to rapidly rising costs. Bakers' demands for price increases due to rising costs are reportedly a contributing factor. When these price increases were brought to the agenda of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) Assembly, public debate also erupted.

“THIS PRICE CANNOT BE HIGH”

Selim Şimşek, Vice President of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO) Bread, Flour, and Bakery Products Professional Committee, shared some key points bakers should consider when setting prices. Şimşek said, "Companies can sell below this price, but they can't exceed it. Calculating prices based on kilograms is crucial when setting prices. For example, if the price per kilogram is 75 TL, 200 grams of bread should cost 15 TL." He also noted that weight differences can affect prices and that inspections are conducted by the Provincial Directorate of Trade.
