Scientists have discovered that autism begins long before a child is born, and not in the process of socialization, as was previously thought.
The problem lies in the way the brain is formed before birth. Long before a baby speaks, it develops a unique way of processing sensory information – visual, auditory and tactile. An international team of researchers, including experts from the University of Kansas Lifespan Research Institute, conducted a large-scale analysis to understand how perception is formed in people with autism.
The scientists focused on studying sensory development in the prenatal period and the first months of life. As Carissa Cascio, one of the authors of the study, noted, the sensations of sounds, light and touch in people with autism can be significantly different. Previous studies in this area faced difficulties due to the orientation of methods on adults and older children, while the study of infancy and intrauterine development was based mainly on theories. Scientists believe that it is the study of early sensory experience that can lead to a new understanding of autism.
