A treasure trove of coins from 8 Russian tsars has returned to Novgorod land

More than 1,700 Russian silver coins from the 15th-17th centuries have entered the numismatic collection of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve. The treasure, found in 2020 in Veliky Novgorod, returned to its native land after 5 years of research in Moscow laboratories. Now the study of the artifacts will continue here. Subsequently, these coins will be put on display for visitors.
Let us recall that a green ceramic vessel, reminiscent of silver, was found in 2020 during excavations in Veliky Novgorod by employees of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Scientists came to the conclusion that the treasure was buried during the Time of Troubles, namely, during the era of the Swedish occupation of Novgorod (1611-1617).
It should be noted that the numismatic collection of the Novgorod State Museum-Reserve is one of the largest in Russia.
Now it has been replenished with: • 2 dengas of Ivan III • 4 dengas of Vasily III • 186 dengas and 276 kopecks of Ivan IV • 22 dengas and 148 kopecks of Fyodor Ivanovich • 272 kopecks of Boris Godunov • 96 kopecks of Dmitry Ivanovich (False Dmitry I) • 230 kopecks of Vasily Ivanovich Shuisky • 15 kopecks of Vladislav Sigismundovich • 458 kopecks minted in Novgorod during the Swedish occupation • 2 unidentified kopecks And even 3 counterfeit kopecks!
Thus, this treasure was accumulated over more than one generation and is a silent witness to the formation of Russia over the course of approximately 1.5 centuries.
