Marseille. Attacker shot after injuring five people

Five people were attacked this Tuesday in the French city of Marseille after a man was evicted from a hotel for non-payment. The attacker was later shot dead by authorities . One of the injured is in serious condition.

According to the French press , the Tunisian suspect (with legal immigration status) stabbed the hotel owner, the owner's son, and a hotel guest. He then went out into the street and attacked two passersby with a baton for no apparent reason.

Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said the man attacked people "for no reason" after stabbing three people at the hotel. The attacker, who was carrying two knives and a baton, then tried to enter a fast-food restaurant and attempted to "stab the customers."

At that moment, French police intervened and demanded that the man drop his weapons. "He didn't comply. The officers neutralized him," Nicolas Bessone continued. The incident occurred near the port of Marseille, where a security perimeter was set up.

The man was "known" to French authorities. According to Le Figaro , the attacker had "unstable" behavior and suffered from mental health issues, but was not currently receiving psychiatric treatment. The same newspaper reports that the Tunisian citizen had previously been expelled from a mosque for "aggressive comments."

At the X, Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan expressed "support for all those affected by the heinous attack." "I spoke with the Minister of the Interior, who will be in Marseille tonight. The safety of the people of Marseille is my priority."
